Snow? Snow? I don’t remember moving to New Hampshire. It’s coming down in big fat thick flakes. Which my camera isn’t quite capturing. Rats.
Maybe in December we can get snow like this, but it’s only October.
This madness must stop!

Pay no attention to the snow behind the curtain. Just draw the shade. Besides, that isn’t snow, it’s too wet. It’s, um, early spring precipitation. Very early spring.
And if you’ll believe that one, I know of a nice bridge from Lower Manhattan. Looks beautiful when it’s all lit up at night.

I thought I would try an experiment. While I didn’t care for what I wrote in the flash fiction workshop at Boskone, I did feel inspired enough to try again. So here’s a picture I took this morning, after letting it sit in the back of my mind, here’s what came out when I started [...]

We were so close to getting rid of the ice. It was even forming cool shapes, like shelves on the front steps.
The first snowdrop is lifting a white flower from the brown earth.
But no. Now it’s all covered with a thin, thin layer of slick, white goop. Overnight it’s going to rain and get thinner [...]

It’s getting warmer and it’s showing more greenery out there, but it’s looking a little like collards are not the sort of plants that consider a foot of snow good protection against winter. I haven’t seen them since I managed to cut a potful of leaves for greens on New Year’s Day. Now, I wonder [...]

Could this be our February thaw? The ice is melting under the tiny shelves that form at the edges of the snowbanks. You can hear dripping all around outside. It’s still not melting fast enough to suit me, and while I was hacking at crunchy, cracking ice, I found out that my scarf is indeed [...]

After another batch of fluffy white, the snow is getting to the point where clearing a path means cutting between ever higher walls and trying to throw the loose snow onto the dreaded six foot berm. Is it any wonder that my eye is drawn to the odd little gaps where the snow didn’t accumulate?

Well, well, well. There is indeed a goldfinch visiting my hacked feeder. He was a little hard to spot, first because he’s wearing winter clothes, but mostly because he’s only showing up in the morning. Nice to see you, little guy!

Last night’s snow came down wet. So did the sleet, and the slush, and the rain. To be followed by freezing cold over night. I hate when that’s about to happen.
The warning sign comes when you look out at the patio and all the fluffy white snow has gone grey and semi-translucent and it’s smiling [...]

It seems to take life-threatening weather to keep the cats inside. After all, there is Important Cat Business that Needs to be Attended to. Therefore, they must go out, barefoot or barepawed, sidle along the house, leap between dry spots, and–if pressed–wade through snow belly deep. And just when I’m getting impressed by how little [...]
